Roy Carlson, Jr. Obituary

Roy C. Carlson, Jr., of Portland, ME, passed away peacefully at his home on June 29, 2022, at the Atrium at The Cedars. He was born in Norwood, MA on August 28, 1926, the son of the late Minnie B. (nee Trask) and Roy C. Carlson, Sr.  

He grew up in Beverly, MA and was a graduate of Beverly High School. Roy was a proud World War II veteran, having served in the Pacific theater aboard the USS Westmoreland. Following the war, he met his future wife, Barbara M. Winship, at a YWCA dance in Boston. They were married in 1949 in Patten, ME.

Roy completed a mechanical engineering degree at Northeastern University in Boston in 1952, and subsequently and worked for Raytheon Company in Waltham, MA, the United Shoe Corp. in Beverly, MA, and Western Electric in North Andover, MA. He retired from Western Electric in 1983.

In retirement, Roy served on the board of investment at Georgetown Savings Bank for several years. In recent years, Roy enjoyed following the stock market, exercising at the gym with his friends Bob Ryan and Paul Cappella, feeding the birds, and spending time with family and friends. Roy was predeceased by his wife, Barbara, and is survived by daughters, Susan M Carlson of Kalamazoo, MI, Nancy C. Gunnoe and husband Eric L Gunnoe of Portland, ME, granddaughters, Mollie C. Gunnoe of Portland, ME, Elspeth M. Gunnoe of Roanoke, VA and great-grandson, James Crawford of Roanoke, VA, and many nieces, nephews, and their children.

His strength, gentleness, and kindness will be greatly missed by his family, and friends and staff at the Atrium. Roy’s family expresses gratitude to the Atrium staff at The Cedars, Northern Lights Hospice, and Comfort Keepers for their gracious compassion and support in Roy’s last days. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Cedars, 640 Ocean Ave, Portland, ME 04103.

A funeral service will be held at Byfield Parish Church, 132 Jackson Street, Georgetown, MA, on Saturday, July 23, 2022, at 10 a.m. The family respectfully requests that face coverings be worn during the service.
