Lorraine E. Adelman passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 29, 2020 at Seaview Retreat in Rowley, MA. Lorraine was born in Uxbridge, MA to George Merchant and Laura (Renault) Merchant on March 17, 1931. She was a graduate of Somerville High School Class of 1950, where she was recognized for her many artistic contributions. Lorraine and her late husband Jack had three daughters, and they spent almost 50 years together living in Rowley and later Salisbury, MA.
Lorraine deeply loved nature, poetry, and people. After graduating high school, she worked at Boston Children’s Hospital caring for young burn victims. She was also a gifted artist, working as a window display decorator and fashion coordinator at Chandler’s Department store in Boston. She was later the Activities Director at Seaview Retreat for over 25 years. Lorraine enjoyed spending time with her family and traveling with her husband Jack in their retirement. She was a longtime member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Newburyport as well as the Salisbury Historical Society and the Women’s Alliance.
Lorraine was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by her daughters Cynthia DeSisto of Amesbury, Melinda Boucher of Kittery Point, ME and Leslie Rust of Beverly. Her seven grandchildren include Nicole and Tara DeSisto, Daniele and Michael Boucher, and Hannah, Brennan and Jacob Rust. Her niece and nephew include Kathleen O’Connell and Jay Corey. Lorraine will be fondly remembered by sons-in-law, David Rust, predeceased by Ray Boucher and Jim DeSisto (ex-husband to Cynthia), who were also close to her heart. Cynthia’s partner Chris DeFonzo was another person Lorraine loved. Lorraine was also predeceased by her sisters Doris O’Connell and Annette Corey. In addition to many close friends.
Anyone touched by Lorraine’s love and kindness was truly blessed.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, February 6, 2020 from 2-4 p.m., at F.S Roberts & Son Funeral Home, 14 Independent Street, Rowley. A Memorial Service will follow immediately at
