Mark Andrew Schleeweis
September 17, 2009
Mark Andrew Schleeweis would not want to be
defined by his career, his memberships or where he grew up. He would want to be
remembered for being a nurturing father, loving son, great friend and family
member, and the best brother in the world. He was all of these and more. He made
every person feel that no matter what, he had all the time in the world for
them.
An avid reader, Mark and his sister were moved to hike the Massachusetts section
of the Appalachian Trail after reading “A Walk in the Woods.” Unfortunately,
after a year long battle with cancer, Mark’s struggle ended on September 17,
2009, precluding that hike. He was surrounded by those he loved.
Mark started his journey in 1950, growing up in New Bedford, MA. A 1968 graduate
of New Bedford High School, Mark earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the
University of Rhode Island and an M.S. in Environmental Engineering from UMASS
Amherst. He had a long and productive career as a Section Chief in Water Quality
and Waste Water Management with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental
Protection in Springfield. Through his work, he touched many communities always
advocating for their environmental health.
Mark spent the majority of his adult years in the Amherst area. His children
were his life and he volunteered and coached their many activities, which
included Amherst Youth Soccer and the Amherst Triton Swim Team, among others. He
was tremendously proud of his children’s accomplishments.
Always ready to reach a hand to those in need, Mark loved life and the people in
it. He was a warm, fun loving and generous man with a wild sense of humor. He
loved music, kayaking, hiking, and yes… the Jets! He could always be found at
a UMASS Hockey game. Mark was a member of the Fraternal Organization of Free
Masonry and devoted much time to both the school committee and board of health
in Shutesbury, MA.
Mark is survived by his three children: Jordan Schleeweis (19), Avery Schleeweis
(17), and Erik Schleeweis (14), all of Shutesbury, MA; his mother Ruth
Schleeweis of Groveland, MA (formerly of New Bedford); aunt Betty King of New
Bedford; cousin Kathi Zeller, husband John and daughter Ashlee of Tiverton, RI;
cousin Gary King and wife Pat of Westport, MA and younger sister Joan Schleeweis-Connor,
her husband John and their three children Melanie, Gregory and Michael of
Rowley, where Mark spent the last year of his life while undergoing cancer
treatment. Those who knew Mark and Joan called them “twins 4 years apart.”
Life long best friends, she devoted herself to helping Mark beat cancer. Their
motto was “Never, Never, Never Give up Hope!”
A memorial service will be held at 1:30PM on Wednesday, September 23, at F. S.
Roberts & Son Funeral Home, 14 Independent St. Rowley with the Reverend
Laura Biddle officiating. A service in Western Massachusetts is planned for
Monday, October 5. Memorial donations may be made to The Research and Education
Foundation of the American Head and Neck Society, 11300 W. Olympic Boulevard,

Anna
O. Kent
November 26, 2007
ROWLEY: Anna O. Kent, the oldest Rowley resident and holder of
the Boston Post Cane, passed away on Monday, November 26, 2007, with
family at her side.
Anna was born on March 26, 1903, in Boston, MA, daughter of Amelia and
Santos Bottari and one of seven children. After graduating from business
school, she married and moved to Rowley with Charles Oakes. Together
they started the Rowley Garage on Main Street and sold Packard
Automobiles and gasoline. Between the years 1925 and 1927 she taught
many people how to drive a car. At this time it was most unusual for
women to drive. She was an expert driver and was able to drive until she
gave up her license in 1995. She had a clean driving record.
After the death of her husband Charles in 1929, she later married Howard
Kent. She operated cabins, a small dining room and gas station until
World War II, at which time these business operations were ceased due to
the gasoline rationing. Howard predeceased her in 1975.
The Rowley community and its people were her life. Even in the early
90's she often visited friends in the nursing home. She could often be
seen taking a daily walk and visiting friends and neighbors.
She loved to cook, sew, knit and crochet. She prided herself in having a
large garden plot where she grew an abundance of vegetables, always
having plenty to share with family and neighbors throughout the growing
season. During the spring and summer, you would always find Anna in her
garden. Many of her vegetables and flowers took top prizes in the
Topsfield Fair, year after year. Before moving to Sea View Retreat, she
kept a small vegetable garden by the side of her home. Just as gardening
was a part of her life, she also loved to cook, and there are many who
remember Anna's homemade donuts and pies.
When the weather was too cold to
garden she kept busy knitting and crocheting sweaters, hats, mittens and
afghans. Some of her handiwork took first prizes at the Topsfield Fair.
Anna was a member of St. Mary's Church and for many years was a choir
member. She participated in the church's fundraising efforts such as
rummage sales and suppers. She was also an active member of Rowley
Grange, and it was through her diligence and weekly Whist parties that
Rowley Grange was able to purchase the hall now known as the Rowley
Grange Community Hall. Even in her 90's she continued to do what she
could to help prepare fundraising suppers.
Anna was co-founder of the Rowley Printing Company, owned by son Donald.
She worked as a bookbinder and packer from 1958 till the company closed.
During her lifetime she also worked at the Hytron, the Post Office, and
as a cook at the Governor Dummer Academy.
Anna is survived by a sister, Josephine DelOrfarno of Medford. She is
also survived by four children and their spouses: Barbara and Allan
Gaspar of Newbury; Marlene and James Norton of Hampton, NH; Donald and
Ann Kent of Rowley; and Richard Kent of Rowley. She adored her 13
grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, 7 great-great grandchildren and

Carole was always interested in the genealogy of her family and once she
retired, she spent many hours traveling and researching the ancestors of
her parents. In addition, she liked to write stories about her family
and the ancestors and attended writing classes at the Boxford Council on
Aging. She was a voracious reader of mysteries and enjoyed sewing.
Carole was also an avid bird watcher and for many years banded birds on
Nantucket as part of a national study on the migration of birds. When
she could no longer go out birding, she kept several feeders at her
windows so the birds could come to visit her.
