Grace Duncan Freeman

Grace Duncan Freeman, devoted mother, nurse, and friend, died peacefully at the Country Center after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Born October 23, 1926, in Stirlingshire, Scotland, Grace immigrated to the U.S. at age 3 with her family and settled in East Hartford, Conn. Daughter of Elizabeth (Frickelton) Duncan and Peter Stewart Duncan, she was predeceased by her four siblings Alex, Agnes, Peter, and Elizabeth.

Grace married Robert E. Freeman on August 20, 1947, and was married for 54 years before he passed in 2001. She is survived by her daughters Bonnie Papoulias and husband Bill of Newbury, Mass; Elizabeth Laurent and husband Paul of Bridgewater, NH; and son Peter Freeman of Orlando, FL. Grace had six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren who adored her as she did them. Grandchildren are Travis Papoulias of Newbury, Mass; Amy Harding and husband Ben of Newburyport, Mass; Robert Laurent of Medford, Mass; Carrie May and husband Brad of Oviedo, FL; Cameron Freeman, home based FL, currently sailing around the world; and Grace Freeman, her namesake, of Atlanta, GA. Great-grandchildren are Hannah and Leah Papoulias; Parker, Eden, and Colton Harding; and Carson May. Grace is also survived by many friends and relatives too numerous to mention.

Grace became an LPN at age 38, fulfilling her lifelong purpose and dream. She was meant to be a nurse and spent most of her career caring for elderly. She loved people and was the best friend anyone could have. Always compassionate and giving, she set a great example of how to treat our fellow beings. She so deserves to be at peace. She will be dearly missed, but as she promised, she will be all around us, giving her guidance, love, and light.

The family is so grateful for the loving care she received at Country Center for the past four years and at Haverhill Crossings prior to that. Calling hours are respectfully omitted and Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Pettengill House in Salisbury, MA.
